PA Deutsch / PA German (aka PA Dutch) Ethnic Group
and Colonial USA Deutsch Ethnic Group
Anthrogenealogy Research Project/Study
using BioGeographical Ancestry (BGA) atDNA,
yDNA, and mtDNA DNA Genetic Markers

A Project to Learn More about the Genetic Genealogy
and Anthrogenealogy of our Pennsylvania Deutsch Ancestors.

Is there an Ancient Genetic Connection Between some Pennsylvania Deutsch
and their Ethnic Group founders from s.w. Germany, Switzerland, and the
Main River Valley area connecting the Danube River basin to the Rhine River basin
and Asiatic Tribes such as the Scythians, Huns, and Mongols?

Or could it be the genetic influences on the population in s.w. Germany and Switzerland from the Roman Legions
from the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire stationed there at various times to help subdue the German tribes?

Hypothesis

That some people, or sub-groups, within the Pennsylvania Deutsch/German (
aka PA Dutch) ethnic group may have a small but detectable percentage of Asian genetic content in their genome, of non-recent origin in a genealogist's time frame, possibly introduced into their ancestor's genomes from the major invasions of southern Germany by tribes from Asia such as the Huns and Mongol hordes which invaded Europe at various times during the period of 1600-700 years ago, or of even older more ancient origin such as from the Scythians, or all of these sources. These Asian genetic markers from invasion and gene flow from the east were then brought to Pennsylvania with the founding populations of the Pennsylvania Deutsch. In particular some religious sects such as the Moravians and Schwenkfelders may have been more heavily influenced by Asian army invasions of Europe since these religious sects were from more central eastern Europe and thus when these religious sects moved in mass to Pennsylvania seeking religious freedom after sojourning and taking refuge in s.w. Germany from religious persecution in their homeland areas, they would have brought their more eastern central European genetic markers with them to the founding populations which as all the various founding population groups in the inland counties of s.e. Pennsylvania melded over the generations prior to 1800, became known as the PA Deutsch. Data collected by this project, and subsequent analysis, will attempt to prove or disprove this hypothesis and/or will be used to eventually try and get an anthropologist or population geneticist to look at this possible "discovery" about the PA Deutsch in greater detail.

More Information About the PA Deutsch/Germans, aka PA Dutch

Who Can Join the Project?

The project is seeking participation from genealogists whose ancestry is predominantly PA Deutsch. You must know and have documented that PA Deutsch roots exist in both your father's and mother's sides. You must be able to document your genealogy back at least 5-6 generations and be able to provide a standard genealogical ancestry chart to verify your PA Deutsch ancestry. While the initial participants were derived from my early Y-DNA surname projects such as the Kerchner Surname YDNA Project, participants of any PA Deutsch surname are now actively being sought and encouraged to join this project. This is not a single surname or typical genealogy project. This is an ethnic group anthropological study project. The more diverse the group of PA Deutsch participants we have participating the better. What is required to join is that you be of self-identified PA Deutsch ancestry and be genealogically documented as predominantly of "PA Deutsch/German, aka PA Dutch" ancestry (75%, i.e., 6 of 8 of your great-grandparents, or more). In addition to YDNA and mtDNA testing, this project uses autosomal DNA testing which is why at least 6 of 8 of your great-grandparents must be of PA Deutsch origins. And you must have supporting traditional genealogical information to document your PA Deutsch ancestry. And you have to be willing to submit a DNA sample for the DNA tests and share the test results with this project. The specific identity of participants in this project will be kept confidential. Only surnames and current state of residence will be disclosed. Participants must be individuals who self-identify themselves and their heritage as being predominantly PA Deutsch. Participants or their immediate ancestors do not have to now live in PA. But they must be able to trace most of their early paternal and maternal line ancestry back to PA and to document that 75% or more of their early ancestry came from PA Deutsch ancestors. In other words at least 6 out of 8 of your great-grandparents must be of PA Deutsch heritage. In addition to being of documented PA Deutsch ancestry, the ideal candidate for this project would be male bearing a PA Deutsch surname, since males can also provide the paternal line Y Chromosome DNA test results, which females don't have. If the males in the family are not into genealogy, then a female genealogist can sponsor a male member of her family such as a brother, father, uncle, grandfather, or great-uncle as long as he is willing to be the proxy for the family to provide the DNA sample. But if a male is not available or unwilling to participate, the project is also open to females with a PA Deutsch maiden name directly. The only required DNA test to participate in this project currently is the DNAPrint Version 2.5 BioGeographical Ancestry test. However, you will be encouraged to also take one of the other tests over time, such as the Y-DNA paternal line Y Chromosome DNA test the mtDNA maternal line Mitochondria DNA test, as one can afford to do them, if you have not already done the additional tests previously, in order to gain the additional anthropological data from those tests. But, depending on the availability of funds, ideally it would be benefical to the project database if some of the supplemental DNA tests can be ordered simultaneously with the required DNAPrint test. Please contact me if interested or if you have more questions.

Benefits of Participation

Some benefits of participation in this project and using new Genealogy by Genetics tools:
1. Using the various tests you will identify a genetic genealogy profile of your family line.
2. You will be joining the ranks of a select few early Genetics and Genealogy Pioneers and will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are an early participant in a state-of-the-art project which is contributing to the world knowledge base for this new and exciting field, Genealogy by Genetics.
3. You may identify your roots when traditional documentary genealogical research methods have failed.
4. Your results may identify information offering clues of where to focus and pursue additional traditional documentary genealogical research.
5. You may be able to verify once and for all that your traditional documentary genealogical work is accurate and scientifically verified.
6. You may get clues or help others get clues as to the village of origin in Europe of their immigrant ancestor.
7. If you live in Europe with a similar surname to another participant you may find descendants and cousins living in the USA you did not know you had.
8. Your DNA will be preserved for the future at no additional cost. Thus, you leave something for posterity for use by future members of your family. This is especially important for older members of a family, particularly if that older person is the last surviving male member of the family. Note: if that elderly person cannot afford the test another family member can sponsor and pay for the test.
9. You may identify new genetic cousins you did not know you had.
10. By donating a DNA sample now for posterity, your descendants won't have to dig you up later. :-)

How Much Do The Various DNA Tests Cost?

The testing company I have selected to use for coordination of this project for YDNA, mtDNA, and atDNA testing is
FamilyTreeDNA. When ordering your sample collection kit from FamilyTreeDNA you should coordinate the ordering through me as the Group Coordinator to insure your results are linked to this project. When you are ready to order your sample collection kit, email me and let me know your complete name and postal mail address, and telephone number, and that you want to submit a sample and order a kit and I will assist you placing your order and get you a discounted price if available for that kit. You will receive your invoice directly from FamilyTreeDNA.com with your sample collection kit which you can pay by check or credit card. As of Jan 2015 the group net prices for the tests are: $99 (Group) for the Family Finder atDNA BioGeographical Ancestry (BGA) test, $169 (group) for the 37 Marker Y-DNA test, and $69 (group) for the mtDNA+ kit. The minimum test kit you need to order to start participation in this project is the Family Finder atDNA test kit. Combination orders at lower prices for some tests are available if you want to order mutiple tests at the same time. All prices quoted above are at cost and are paid directly to the testing labs. I am conducting this project as part of my hobby interests in genealogy and the PA Deutsch Ethnic group, which is my heritage. Any questions, please contact me and I will be happy to try and answer your questions.
