The Hoch family is listed therein as a Huguenot (Reformed Protestant) family.
The Huguenots fled Roman Catholic France and French controlled areas in the late 1600's
for protection to Protestant German Principalities and Holland. Descendants then later
resettled in Berks County, Pennsylvania, in the early 1700's. The Huguenots
were attracted to Pennsylvania for the religious freedom it offered.

Special Note: Regarding the allegations that Veronica, wife of Rudolph Hoch, has a maiden name of UNK. That UNK maiden/family name is a high-tech, computer created, abbreviation for Unknown and UNK has become a genealogical urban legend in in many families its own right and will not die a natural death it seems. So let me add this special note and maybe it will at least be the silver bullet that kills this false tidbit for the Hoch family. If anyone else has access to online databases for the Hochs, I would recommend you put a link to this page or post a similar message therein about this UNK name issue. I have been a hobby genealogist for 30 years. Hoch is in my ancestry. I have probably received 25 emails in the last year or two about a maiden name found online and/or being passed around by unknowing researchers in the last 10 years that Veronica's maiden name was UNK. UNK is a U.S. government and computer software abbreviation which was used in some early genealogy software packages. It stands for UNKOWN. Whoever wrote that computer program was not a very good genealogist and should have just left the surname/maiden name field blank or fully spelled out the word Unknown. There are a lot of UNK people floating around now on the internet because of that poorly thought out computer program. And it is being passed around the internet now like a virtual bad penny. Pretty soon the virtual reality, bad penny, family of UNK will be linked to every family in the world. Veronica is an example of that. Her maiden is not known, i.e, unknown and is definitely not UNK, from my 30 years of traditional records research. I defy anyone to show me the primary source evidence for Veronica's maiden name being UNK. Of course I have heard of the nickname of "Unk" as short for "Uncle". However, I don't even think there is a family surname of UNK except for the wrong maiden family names created online and now even repeated in print by that poorly thought out computer software package. Just sharing this tidbit here and venting a bit ... as answering the increasing number of emails about this growing UNK family is getting a little bit tiring at this point in my life. It is like fighting a windmill with a wooden sword at times, but I keep trying. Let's see. What was that fellow's name anyway who was always fighting windmills. I think it was Don .... something. I can't remember. I guess it will have to be Don "Unk" until I remember. :-) With that bit of attempted humor we'll move on. I thought I'd trying posting this message here as another approach to killing this UNK family/surname/maiden name ... bad penny. :-)
