Daniel Levan arrived 18 Sep 1727 at Philadelphia PA on ship William and Sarah.
Settled near his earlier arriving brother Jacob Levan
in the area now known as Maxatawny Twsp, Berks County PA.
He was a German speaking French Huguenot.
The Huguenots were Protestants and were refugees from Roman Catholic
France and French controlled areas. They left and/or were expelled during
the frequent religious conflicts and wars of that time period.
The Levans were staunch members of the Reformed (Protestant) faith.
See the book "The Trail of the Huguenots" by Dr. G. Elmore Reaman for more
about the Huguenots. The Levan family is listed therein as a Huguenot
family which first fled to Amsterdam, Holland in the late 1600's.
Descendants then later resettled in Berks County, Pennsylvania, in the early 1700's.
The Huguenots were attracted to Pennsylvania for the religious freedom it offered.

I descend from an Isaac Levan (1769-1819) who is known to be a descendant of Daniel Levan (ca1705-1777). Because of confusing historical accounts the exact connection of my Isaac Levan to the immigrant Daniel Levan is not known with 100% certainty. The 1927 Levan Family book by Warren Coon says my Isaac was the son of a Peter Levan, s/o Daniel Levan. But recent research indicates that is probably not true as Peter died a bachelor with no issue listed per his estate.

Part of the confusion is that Daniel Levan was married twice which was not known by Mr. Coon at the time of the publishing of his 1927 Levan Family book. Thus part of the confusion is due to the confusion as to which wife of Daniel was Peter's mother. Daniel Levan died in May 1777. Peter Levan, s/o Daniel, and Susanna (nee Siegfried) Levan, second wife of Daniel Levan, died at about the same time in April 1778. Daniel Levan names all 16 of his children in his Will but does not specify which children are from which wife. However, Susanna Levan, the second wife of Daniel Levan specifically names her step-children in her Will and leaves the rest of her estate to her natural children to be divided in equal shares between them. Based on my analysis of the three estate files, I believe that Peter Levan was the eldest son of Susanna (nee Siegfried) Levan, the second wife of Daniel, since Susanna specifically named her step-children in her estate and bequeathed them each a specifically specified flat amount of money but did not name or list all her natural children. Her unnamed natural children were bequeathed equal shares of her residual estate. Peter was not named by Susanna as a step-child and is thus surmised to be one of the unnamed natural children of Susanna. As further evidence that Peter was a natural cild of Susanna, Peter's personal estate was administered by Abraham Levan who is named as his "brother" in the estate records of Peter. Additionally and very telling in my opinioon, Peter's personal estate received a share of Susanna's residual estate as did other full siblings and natural children of Susanna. Peter getting a share of Susanna's residual estate clearly proves to me that he was a natural son of Susanna. These estates were not settled for many years because of a dispute between Abraham Levan and his siblings over repayments of debts owed by Abraham Levan to his father Daniel's estate. Daniel Levan's estate and all the other various intertwined estates remained open and unsettled for decades and into the early 1800's.

As to my specific direct line and the assertion by Warren Coon in his 1927 work that my Isaac Levan (1769-1819) was a son of Peter (ca1743-1778), s/o Daniel, the 1778 Berks Co PA estate records for that Peter Levan reports Peter died as a bachelor, with no issue mentioned. What's more, the Berks Co PA Will dated 9 Jul 1776 and proved 5 Jul 1777 for Daniel Levan (ca1705-1777), husband of Susanna Siegfried, his second wife, reports he had a minor aged children named Jacob, Isaac, Sarah, and Dorothea. My Levan ancestor Isaac Levan was born in Feb 1769 and was thus age 7 in July 1776. I believe my Isaac Levan (1769-1819) was the youngest son of Daniel Levan and his second wife Susanna Siegfried and that the differing account given by Warren Coon in the 1927 Levan Family book is in error. I have prepared below a chart of a partial list of descendants for Daniel Levan (c1705-1777) to four generations which details my conclusions to date.
