Comments: Just updating my earlier listing as my e-mail has changed. Still interested in identifying the Lawrence in PA refered to in family lore - is it a town, county or other? Jacob Berkey b. Oct. 8, 1793 in Lawrence,PA, DoD Sept 12, 1880 in Ohio. His wife, Mary Koppes, b. Jan. 18, 1800 Lawrence, PA. Jacob descended of Christian Berkey (1758-1828) & Gertrude Kolb. Christian may be descended of Peter Berkey of Allentown and "Miss Snyder". Any info on any of these would be much appreciated. This Berkey family not related to one listed in LDS (at least as documented) except by marriage of Anna (Nancy) Berkey of this line to Stephen Berkey of the LDS line. Really great site.

Comments: Thank you for providing this information. I didn't realize there were more than one German customary pattern to follow for naming children. I wonder what criteria determined which pattern was used by a particular family unit: religion?; is this discussed by any books you recommended? The information I have on the families of generations of 3rd-7th great-grandparents in, or from, the Rheinland doesn't include full names of the children to establish a pattern, even though the data are from German parish records. I'm also curious about naming patterns used by the French; offhand, are you aware of any resources? -- RLE.

The Ritchhart family was indeed a German speaking Swiss family from Oberhoffen to PA in about 1750 before moving to Virginia in about 1768. This move Was probably due at least in part to the unrest with the natives, and cheaper land in Vitginia.

Comments: Johann Konradt Lahm, soon to be Conrad Lamb, arrived Phila in 1741 from Kleinich, Rhineland Pfalz, Germany. With him was cousin Michael Neu. Conrad was a tailor. Michael was a linen weaver. I think they went north to Easton. Anyone ever hear of them? Yours is one of the best web sites I have found. Thanks very much.

Comments: Very information is very informative on the genealogy of our Pennsylvania German Ancestors. The use of Pennsylvania Dutch was always in question to me as my ancestors originally came from Halberstadt, Saxony, Germany via Butten, Alsace to America in the 1750's. I guess that the stigma of Pennsylvania Dutch name will never be replace by the use of the Pennsylvania German name. I am writing a book (15 years of research and writing to date) on the "History & Genealogy of the Donmoyer Family in America" and hope to have it completed in time for the August, 2002 Donmoyer Reunion.
