Comments: My Grandfather was Henry Barthel who was born in 1842 supposedly in Baden Germany. I was told he stowed away to the states and settled on the south side of the Lehigh Mountain. He married a Catherine Ruth the 22nd of April 1882 and they had five sons: William, Jacob,John,Wesley, and Charles (my father). Henry died 2 September 1912. I am trying to locate any information as to my grandfather's parents.

Comments: I have just started on this project about 3 months ago and have built a family tree, however, I sure need a lot more information and names and documentation. Especially on the Gruber, Gruver and the Barnett, Campbell. These are completely dark almost at this juncture. The Hittles I found a lot of help with as their family has been keeping track of everything for years and years it seems. It looks like my family traveled with the Hittel, Hittle families whenever or whereever they moved to toward the midwest and they intermarried. Will keep looking and if you have any information that you think will help would appreciate your help. I was born June 25, 1930 in Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas.

Comments: You are not related to my family of Tonsings - I just wanted to tell you how impressed I was with your detailed information and the presentation of your data. You are an inspiration to all genealogists, whether professional or not. My family came from Germany during the late 1700's and early 1800's - and searching for their stories has given me a new appreciation for United States history. Too bad genealogy isn't taught as a regular subject in schools.

This Reiswig family were the Germans from Russia that came over in the late 1800s. Like the PA Dutch who were not Dutch, these Germans dressed and looked like Russians, but they couldn't speak Russian. They had kept their German heritage and language all the years they were in Russia.

We know that Lockburner is not the origional spelling-looking for any help to find the origional name. Every one had a Frank and a Conrad. It gets confusing trying to keep them straight. Enjoyed the music!!!!!! It always adds feeling to the people you are researching

Example: Great-grandfather Karl Friedrich Wilhelm, Oldest great-uncle William Friedrich Carl, grandfather (fifth son) Frederich Carl William. Your terrific page will help me puzzle this through. Thanks!

Comments: Your statement that someone with the name Kerchnerin is a person who has something to do with the church and is female is misunderstandable. The ancestor’s name was given to him because he worked for or lived near the church or in a street or House with the name cotaining the word church, for example -Zur Kirche- or -Kirchengasse-. The suffix -in- however was only given to this very female person, the wife of Hrn. Kirchner, no matter what her profession was. Concerning German Names I can recommend the work of Karl-Heinz Brechenmacher, issued in two books, alphabetically, which is the most accurate and reliable source I know. Liebe Gruesse (Best wishes), Hark Weidling

Your preface to the Kerchner Ancestry is stirring, and your progenitor's evidence is both organized and logical. Your comment about the Germans walking the six miles from Phila. to Germantown didn't apply to my ancestors. They must have been tired and stayed in Philadelphia.
