Comments: We communicated years ago. I'm still looking for the father of my great grandfather Samuel Alexander Horn, b. 1829 Lehigh Co. PA d. 1902 Tiffin, OH. I feel like I've exhausted all resources. I'm considering hiring Michael Lacopo to see what he might find. Although, I feel like I've turned over every stone. Thanks for your website and the latest updates.

Comments: Thank you for sharing your extensive research. Georg Lautenschlager (1743-1833) is my 6th great-grandfather and I was researching his Revolutionary War service when I stumbled upon your website. I think that makes us 6th cousins, 1x removed. I have traced your line down to your grandparents but I can’t get closer than that. Your research pointed out an error in my research—I had Hans Heinrich Lautenschlager as my 7th great-grandfather’s brother and your research shows they are first cousins. (Thank you again.)I have a dna match who is a direct descendant of Hans. My tree is on Ancestry and my mom’s (Dotty Krapf) dna is on Ancestry, 23andMe, and Family Tree DNA. Mine is on Ancestry and 23andMe. I don’t see you as a match on any of these sites, but perhaps you are using another id. I’m happy to provide info to add my family as more generations under Michael Reader (Roeder) and Anna Jarrett if you are interested. Best, regards, Sandi

Comments: Your explanation as to two names being given to a child is most helpful in the search for and confirmation of my ancestorial lineage in Pennsylvania. It helps also in confirming a "story" handed down by my Sheaffer ancestors that our line in Pennsylvania comes from one of two brothers that came down from New York to the Susquhenah River; one stayed there and the other returned to New York. At this point I'm of the belief that it was Nicolus in Northumberland County and would be my 5th great grandfather. Oh, and of course, our spelling has been angelized from the German spelling, whatever that was. In essence, "go figure."

Comments: I am a descendant of Johan Georg Laudenschlager and Eva M. Egli. Their daughter Anna Barbara is my 5th Great Grandmother. I come from the Sebastien Wendling, Jr., Philip, Jonas, and then Catherine Wentling line. Catherine married Harvey Rinker Hartman. Their son Henry Jacob was my Grandfather and his son Henry Robert Hartman was my father. I never knew the Laudenschlagers were musicians until today. It makes sense because of the name. I am a musician(classical pianist) as were my Dad and Grandfather. I always wondered who my musical ancestors were and certainly the Laudenschlagers would be a prominent part of that. I sincerely appreciate the tremendous amount of work you have done with regard to the Laudenschlager family. Thank you so much.

I would enjoy information on Jonas Fox Christman and his wife Emeline (Miller) Christman and how Jonas received his middle name (Fox). I have memories of being with Rose when I was a little boy in the 1960's, she was about 100 years old, and I have a few photos of myself with my brother standing next to our Great Grandma Rose. If you have any ideas or steps you would like to share in finding info on the Keck's that would be nice. You have done a lot of work here and it is Impressive!

A family source had believed that we were descended from immigrant Daniel Christman [b.1705] but we simply couldn't get the line to go all the way back to him. Now that I can see my line is from Jacob Christman [b.1711] it's a great relief to know where we came from! I'm sorry I don't have a direct male Christman surname in the immediate family to donate DNA, but am excited to see that you've created that project.

Comments: The reason I found your paper on German Naming Customs & Patterns is that I am working on my Family Tree and I had come to the German side of the family. I noticed that so many of the male names began with Johann, Johan, and Johannes. I really did not think that Germans would name the majority of males - John - so, I went in search of an explanation by Googling a question about "why are there so many male names that begin with Johan, including Johann or Johannes. According to what I understand from your article, is that at baptism a child during the 16th and mid-19th centuries was given two names, spiritual and secular respectively. The spiritual name given to males could be Johan, Johann (after St. John) or George (for St. George). The 1st name is the spiritual name, which is not used in public, and the 2nd name is the name the person would go by, thus Johan Heinrich Hellar, the Heinrich would become the name that he would be known by his friends and such. Johan would be dropped except in legal and church records. This naming convention was used with female name, too. Here, the saints could be Maria or Anna, the number of German women is not as much as one may believe Having your article has made a world of difference in my research and understand of my ancestors. Thank you...

I am working hard to continue their work so that my siblings and the generations to come will know their heritage. I have created a 400 page binder full of documents and photos. I have also put a tree together on Wikitree. I am now creating a one name study on the name FRITZ. My siblings knew nothing of my fathers family which I am sure came from Germany. Thank you Taylor Fritz

Comments: Hello. I am so glad I stumbled upon your site. Thank you so much for explaining the German naming, especially the saint's first names and the middle, secular, names. I think after another year of Genealogical research with so many Germans in my family on both my parents' sides, I may have figured it out, but you saved me. I am going to do a DNA Test on my father in 2 weeks, so I look forward to reading your DNA information, especially regarding Germans in PA. I really appreciate your work and help. Thanks.

Comments: Kerchner Info for you Charles, Great to find your website.!!! My grand-father, on my mother's side, was Silas Kerchner, and his brother John, immigrated to Assinboia, Saskatchewan* Canada in 1902?,1903? from Penn (*At that time it was still called the North West Territories, Canada) You are in error where you state, " Y-DNA tests have genetically linked the male lines of this Adam Kerchner to another early immigrant Frederick Kerchner who arrived in Philadelphia PA in 1751 and also settled in Berks Co PA, but later migrated to western PA. These two immigrants were probably 2nd, 3rd, or 4th cousins." Frederick was Adam's baby brother, that's why Adam's son was named Friedrich.. I am named after them both. My name is Frederick Sipchenko (dad's family name from ND). When I was very young, my great-great Aunt from New York state visited us carrying with her, the ancient Kerchner FAMILY BIBLE, with history starting in about 1550 .(of course in German) . Her name was Edna Hicks ( I saw Ecks in your passages: coincidence?) st Edna Hicks founded some form of artists' colony in upstate New York, and willed her her estate to same. The estate was called "Harmony Haven". PERHAPS YOU CAN FIND THE BIBLE in a museum. If you can please send me photo-copies of the family tree. Sincerely, Frederick Sipchenko 220 Erin Meadow Close SE Calgary Alberta Canada T2P -3E6 403-272-5560

Comments: Hello, My 2nd Great-Grandmother was Elisabeth Lautenschlaeger b. abt 1851 m. 2 Feb 1873, Evangelisch, Reichenbach, Starkenburg, Hessen, Germany to Georg Horn. They are the parents of Barbara b. 8 Nov 1873, Gadernheim, Starkenburg, Hessen and she married Georg Arras b. 2 Apr 1873, Gadernheim on 2 Feb 1896 in Gadernheim. As I was looking at your directory I saw a number of common ancestor names. However, I am searching for Elisabeth's and Georg's lineage, at this moment. My Great-grandparents Georg and Barbara Arras' family was the first, in my family, to come to America. I have been able to trace my Arras' lineage back to the mid. 1500's, however, for my Horn and Lautenschlager direct lineage this is as far as I have been able to get to. If you have any information that may help me, I would love to hear from you. Sincerely, Mary Graves

Comments: I came hoping to help, but was disappointed to see that since I am a Frantz through a female, I am not able to participate. My family hails from Slate Lick, Armstrong Co., PA and my Frantz line goes through Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham Frantz. I am confused though as to their orgin. My search has shown them being German, however some online records show them originating in France. Some of the town names supposedly in France are obviously German though, and the people were actually German, so I wonder if the 'French connection' is erroneous... My own searching is pointing to "Schallbach, Lorrach, Baden, Germany" (Extreme SW Germany) and not "Schallbach, Lorraine, France" as some of the Rootsweb notes on Abraham indicate. Do you have any opinion on the subject?

Comments: Your site is just fabulous! I had 91 Y-DNA markers tested by Genebase, but wish I had gone with Familytree, as they cover markers not tested by Genebase, and have a much larger database. Finally decided to do Familytree's 37 marker test, and am waiting on the kit. I was discouraged in my early genealogy search to find there were half a million Schroeder's in the United States alone. Luckily, our haplotype was E3b, which only 6% of Germans have, thus narrowing the search.

Comments: I was searching for information on John Kirchner (husband) and Rachel Caroline Myers (wife, 1831-1956) of Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Your website is fascinating! I especially appreciated reading about why the name is spelled so may different ways. We has always pronounced it with an "sh" in it like "kirshner". In one obituary of a family member the name was spelled "Kirker" and now I know why! If I ever do enough research to link our families I will let you know. Right now I don't see any connection but I haven't gotten very far.

I am working to verify dates and locations with records rather than just seeing someone else's tree with only names, dates, and locations. Knowing that records may not be extant for everything, it is a challenge. I am willing to work together and share in order that past mistakes be corrected in some of what is floating around out there on the Web.

They are listed in, " A List of Early Settlers to Georgia" , copyright 1949, The University of Georgia Press, second printing 1967. They were with the first peoples to set up a colony in Georgia. Henry Bishop was schoolmaster at a school to teach them English in Georgia at Ebenezar in about 1734, he married a Palatine German there. He was given land by Col. Oglethorpe.

My Kerchers are from Hampshire in England at least from the 18th century. It would be interesting to discover when they (most likely) emigrated from Germany to England.

Comments: I am interested in knowing if there are still any family members with the last name of RIBBLE who are descended from Johann Georg Ribble who left Palantine Germany in 1797 journeyed to Sussex NJ and then they journeyed with a whole lot of other families towards Ontario Canada and some of the Ribble family went to PA and stayed there. This is my family tree of my GGma Eliza Ribble-Kelley who was born 1826 in Oakville (Halton County) Ontario Canada. I would be interested in knowing if the Ribble name is also under the UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS. I hope to get a website on both sides of my family tree and am quite interested in finding my RIBBLE side of the family tree. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you soon with any help or suggestions.

My ggg-grandmother, Margaret was born in Northumberland County in 1804 and some of the German Church records had her listed as Rebecca. The name Allen comes to mind through the confusing research. Powell and Kerkhoff, my ???? removed grandparent(s), may have been born in New Jersey or a parent born there. I am sure all of the surnames aforementioned are from Germany, and they spent their entire life there. My dad's father was second generation from Germany. My mom's side, yes some German too! My Y-DNA results became available three weeks ago and now I have found a 24/25 match with a Mouse line, previously Mauss from Germany that came through Pennsylvania from Hornbach, Germany to Virginia, now West Virginia. What makes this interesting is that a specific person in the WV line could be my GGGGGGrandfather who was killed in the French & Indian Wars in April of 1758, but we never know who he was. My test results came in as an I haplogroup and my sub-clade results should be available in another couple weeks.
