Comments: Derr was the maiden name of my mother. Her father's name was Charles Tull Derr. He had two brothers, Frank Alvin and Herbert Blanchard. His father was Charles _ Derr, and I think that his father was Solomon Derr. My mother was the last of the Derr family. They were originally from Oklahoma, Kansas, and Mo. I was interested when I saw your web page, because I have never seen the Derr name before. I would be interested in anything that you know about this family name and where they came from. I know that Solomon and his brother came across the ocean, but I don't know where from. I know that Herbert was born on 3-14-1877 or there abouts.

Comments: My daughter is Jennifer Stice Rowe. I have been doing some Internet research on Charles Stice and have come to the following conclusions: While his last residence before sailing to Philadelphia might have been Alsace-Lorraine, he was actually from (and probably born) east of there in what is now the extreme southwest corner of Germany. I base this on an analysis of latest German phone book which has 144 listings for Steis, Steiss and Steiß for all of Germany. 118 or 82% of those listed live in this small area contiguous with the French border. On the other hand, the Alsace-Lorraine phonebook has only one Steis listing. His first name was probably spelled "Karl" not "Carl". Four individuals listed in the phone were named Karl. There were no Carls listed. Is the above consistant or inconsistant with the information you have?

Page visited: PA Dutch Are German Not Dutch
Surnames of interest:
Comments: Not only PA Dutch(Germans) are called Dutch, but also all Germans in USA farming communities are called Dutch. If they couldn't pronounce your last name, they might just call you Dutch; a common practice in the mid-west, for example.(Ex. Hey Dutch, how's it going? but your real name ist Gerstenbauer that only your "Grossvater" can say correctly) I was told that the English in PA would call the Germans: those dumb Dutch, because their English wasn't so good yet. Not very nice! Soo, since the English were so blond(so many being of Saxon decent and much blonder than most of the PA Dutch, who were from the Rhineland or Switzerland and had dark hair(just look at the Amish),started to refer to the English as "Cheese Heads" German: Johann Kaes(or John Kaes=John Cheese)and in PA Dutch "Jankees" and now we know where "Yankee" comes from,ja? Also, I've never heard PA Germans pronounce Deutsch like High German, but they say "Deitch" or most Amish say something like: Deasch. How often have I heard: (PA) Mir sinn so Deatsch wie Sauergraut! German: Wir sind so Deutsch wie Saukraut. (Eng) We're as German as Sourkraut. I enjoyed your thesis and would like to close by saying: I think most of us German-Americans don't mine being called Dutch due to the two wars with Germany which brought anti-German feelings. My "Grossdadie" said once, when I was just eight, When you say Dutch, they think of Tulips and chocolate, but if you say German, they think of Guns and tanks. Sad, but true. God bless! Robert

Comments: I enjoyed your pages on German names very much. Really helpful. My father in our family was the last person to be named with a saint's name and a personal second name; as a sort of reflection of tradition. I heard him explain it when I was a child. I have already found three groups of Landfried's known to each other before they immigrated from Germany and the info is helpful. Fortunately I had German in college so things aren't quite as strange as they might otherwise be. Thanks for your lovely, helpful web pages.

Most everyone in 9 countries had knowledge of the Amish (sectarians, but most did not know about the "church" PA Germans. It was fun to enlighten them. May I add a book reference: "The Pennsylvania Dutch" by Frederick Klees. Except for my Newfoundland:Fry heritage, I am PG. I learned a lot about our history from this book. His format is well organized and probably the most factual that I had read to date when I first picked it up. It sent me looking for more info! Haven't stopped reading since.

Comments: The naming customs has provided some indication of potential family connections between Schwenks in Bucks and Montgomery Counties. The time period of 1750-1800 can be a little difficult in terms of family associations, due to movement of individual families, with no idea of where they went. The naming pattern issue is one potential clue to re-connecting family associations. Thanks for posting this information. Ed Mosheim
