Comments: I made a copy of your page to show to my uncle who insists that the Pa Dutch are Dutch, not German. Your article explains it so much better than I can, and he is more apt to take your word on the subject than mine. He has been dead-ended for a long time, because he insists on looking for info only in records in Holland. I think that your page will be a great help to BOTH of us. We are a stubborn bunch of people, but can be persuaded if it is done correctly. Thanks again. ~ Etta

Comments: No one from Wisconsin ever explained that to me and I had parts of it figured out from my Lithuanian side, although being drunk sometimes effected it. My grandfather was Dominikus Raymond Matas my dad Raymond Dominikus Matas my uncle Peter Paul Matas Dad was to be Dominikus Raymond also but they were all so drunk they wrote it backwards on the baptismal certificate. I became Timothy Raymond Matas because Timothy was a popular name at the time and Mom's side was in the habit of naming all females after Marie Reitz so every girl, sometimes five in a family had Marie for a middle name. Your information was wonderful, interesting and well explained. Thank you very much! Incidentally, in Nebraska I ran into several Germans from Russia and they spelled their name the same way you spell yours, I think, and pronounced it Kyker and I could never understand that one. Tim

Comments: Hi Charles, it's Jerry Karriger again. Just checking to see if your Frderick K. was in at the same time as my John Karakin/Karriger. They were both June 1780 to Jan. 1781, but not in the same company. Just received in the mail today a packet that includes John's military and pension file. There is military or pension case number S 2681. Looks like my John was a private, served seven (7) months, under Captain Bronson(sp?) of the Regiment commanded by C?. Butler(sp?) of the Penn. line for seven months.

Comments: Thank you so much for the article on naming customs ! ! ! You have helped me finally understand why my husband's people kept using the same names over and over. For years I just thought they didn't have any imagination. Now it helps me in knowing what names to look for in tracing a missing parent or connecting possible siblings. I have passed your web page on to many family researchers and they all agree it is a tremendous help. The people I am working on were Germans from Russia who all came to the States starting in the late 1800's and settled mostly in the Dakota Territory. Thank you again!

Kerchner, Jr., has been in touch with you for several years now, as has my cousin Kimberly (or so I believe). Your line and ours meets in the late 1800's with brothers John Addison Kerchner on my side, and William Henry Kerchner on yours. You might also find it amusing (as do I) that my wife and I named our first son John Philip Kerchner, born in 1995, partially in honor of our (then believed) progenitor...only to discover around our son's 3rd birthday that your more recent study had named Adam Kerchner as progenitor instead. Perhaps we should rename our little Jack? :)

Comments: I was most impressed with the info and background data. Since I am just discovering that I am a PA Dutch descendent and as soon as I have it verified I might like to adopt the page. Valuable info for trying to correlate German names and the whole topic. I am a descendent of Johannes (we think his name, through Johann Georg (John George) and down to my grandmother, Amy Rudolph via Phineas Sylvester. I am writing a book on this family and your material has opened new doors to why my grandmother always use to say she was PA Dutch. I never knew what it meaned except that her family came from PA. Now when I am trying to make German connection I think due to their settling in Westmoreland County, PA that this may be the link I need. Thank you for all of your work. What is involved in adoption?

Otto was born a Hughes, son of Jacob, grandson of Jacob, and great grandson of Christian. This family was also in York Co., PA, Mifflin Co., PA and then to Trumbull Co., OH. I've wondered if Hughes can also be a German name. There seems to be a lot of Germanic type first names. Thanks for your information, your site is interesting.

At the Pioneer Library in Bedford, Pa. they had a file copy of your "German Names" on the table. It answered the "why" of the same first name for several children in the family. That also helped me as I roamed the Bedford County Cemeteries for the next three days. I located several elusive graves, and photgraphed the stones with my trusty digital camera. Filled in a few missing pieces. Thanks.
