Comments: My grandfathers name was Emil Ludwig Lautenschalger. I never knew him. He was a singer. He did the Vaudville circuit for awhile and then later after having children performed with his family, as I understand, locally. However, we have no genealogy on him. He seemed to drop out of the sky. No one knows who his parents are. We believe that he may be at least part Lakota. I understand that back in the mid 1800's the Mourse's and Lautenslagers came from Germany to the USA. The Mourse's lived in Newark, Ohio and Ida Mourse raised my grandfather from the age of 12 I believe. If anyone has any info on my missing heitage I'd greatly appreciated any information. My father never knew who his grandparents where and no one else seems to know either. Thanks

This family once lived in Washington County, Virginia. Migrated from Penn. to N.C. then back to Washington Co. Virginia. Family tradition is that they came from Berks County Penn. and came to American around 1740. His father is believed to have been George Gabbard, Gabbert, Gephert, Gybert.

Married George Henry Hopkins had 7 children (George, my father was 7 yrs old when Katie died. My grandfather then took the 3 boys to live in Mifflinberg, Pa with a Deal family. Just don't have any info. for either of my grandparents (Hopkins-Nunamaker in PA) Could you tell me where to begin? Have read ALL of those who have sent you notes that are interested in German names in PA. All I can remember is my "very German-spoken grandfather" when I was about 10 yrs old. I do know that they were married in Phila., but no mention of WHO my grandmother's family was or where they were from. Could you point me in the right direction?

Comments: I was attracted to your address re: Naming Customs. I was told several times by my husband, but at 76 I do get it confused. Beyond the grandparent and parent naming, however this was all a help to us both. I have some of the above names dead-ended. Perhaps it will lead me to opening up the next generation. For most of the above names I have reached my 4th and 5th g-grandparents, roughly about the 1730 period. Again, my thanks to you. Joan (Rootsweb Subscriber) P.S. Comments: My great Aunt, on the March side, said that our ancestors came from Holland. That was an assumption since the ship departed from Rotterdam. I'm glad that you have so publicly set the record straight concerning Dutch/German. I have recently worked in Holland and came to realize how much the Dutch hate the Germans. I'm also pleased to know that my ancestry is German. On the March side, they came from the Pfalz (Rheinland/Pfalz). On the Firestone side, they emigrated from Elsass (formerly Germany now France). They originally came from the Bregenzerwald (the Bregenz forest of Austria in the province of Vorarlberg). Anyone interested in sharing information, please write.

In reading the historical comments, I am surprised that so few Kerschners, no matter how it is spelled, have visited you, and even more that so few have are interested in researching the name. We haven't decided as yet whether we will attend the Sinking Spring fersommling.

I have other names that lead back to Pennsylvania, unfortunately I am at school at this time and dont have my information with me. I do know, however, that I have a George and a Johann Kerchner who are both from Pennsylvania. I am having a lot of trouble tracing the family any further back. As you probably know, there are a number of ways to spell Kerchner, even in the same family tree. I would appreciate any help that you can give me. If we are related, I would love to share any information that I have with you. I have found a couple of other people that are working on a different branch of the kerschner tree. Thank you very much C. Donahue

My mother's family came from Orangeville, PA near Berwick. Her father was Peter Goldmann Farver, born 1885. His mother was Mary C. Davis. We think her middle/maiden name may have been Clark, as she named another son Clark (Ruckle).
Comments: I enjoyed your website, the music and the explanations about German names and the Pennsylvania Dutch. Actually, my mother's maternal grandfather was from Holland, his name was Samuel Schlauch. He is the furthest we can go back on my grandmother's side, as we don't know where he was born, and he may have been born in Germany, as he spoke German fluently. Thanks for listening. Legend has it that he spent the first ten years in Lancaster/Berks. I can't find anything there. The first 'real' piece I have is him signing at his 3rd child's baptism in 1774. In 1780 he settles in Augusta county, VA. Dies in 1800 leaving 600+ acres and 5 children. We've identified about 400 living descendants but want to push into Germany..He and wife Christenah spoke French and German and by tradition are from Nancy.

I recently received church records of the Koenig family who originated from the city of Radwanki, in Germany or the Heart of Poland, depending what period of time we are talking about. I have no idea where they came ashore, but they moved to NE and there they all lived and died except my dad, who came to San Diego, CA with a $20.00 gold piece in his pocket when he was 19. So here I am. Your German Naming Customs page was very interesting. I printed it out because there seem to be a lot of Johns, Edwards and Katherines in our family. It will be interesting to see if I can find a pattern. I LOVED the music on the page!! It gave me quite a start when it began, but I soon found myself tapping my foot! What a great idea! Kathy

Comments: Thank you, thank you for an excellent article on the Pennsylvania Dutch. My American husband's family lives in the Harrisburg area; they deem themselves more of an authority on Pennsylvania Dutch than I, the "recently arrived" German (18 years ago). My immediate impression was that "Dutch" was a corruption of "Deutsch". Also, a large number of Americans have the false impression that the two language are "nearly the same"; this problem I encounter frequently in my capacity as a German-English translator: I am presented with Dutch or even Afrikaans materials and am told by nonspeakers that they should be a snap to translate. In fact, there are so many "faux amis" between German and Dutch that one can completely MISinterpret a text. Keep up the good work!

Comments: What a great help your explanation is because we are constantly looking for Johan Georg Brigel on of the 1709ers who came into Berks County from Schoharie, N.Y. Now I remember seeing things re George Brickell and various other spellings of Brigel. We were all too busy looking for Johan. We have a record of JGB in 1743 at Chirst church Tulpehocken. We are just trying to find out the names of his children if any. Thanks a million for a great web site. I printed out the info for my other 2 cousins who are working on the tree.

Comments: Enjoyed reading your comments in the pages I read. Most of our research is of the German-Russian connection for first four names with hopes of tracing them back into Germany itself. We became interested in the PA Dutch (why don't you spell it "Deutsch"?) when we found the first Bergstraesser immigrating into PA in the late 1700's. So appreciated your detailed info. And, especially the naming customs as we find so many same names (many Johanns, Maria, etc) in all the families we are researching. Sincerely, Virginia (Krahmer) Less Oh yes, the music was fun to listen to.

Comments: I was born and raised in Bethlehem, PA. My grandparents were born and raised in Hellertown, PA. I was always taught that story about PA. Dutch verses PA. German. I always knew and am proud. I would like to research my fathers side of the family, but I don't know what to do or where to begin! I don't have money to spend on it, either. My Dad gave me as much info as he could and my Nana and Pop-Pop are both gone. Can you point me in the right direction? Thank You, Sue

Comments: I am looking for any information on the Phillip Von Klump that can over on the Misfert(?) - or any Von Klump etc. The name has been changed so that my great-grandfather William Clum's father's name also shows this change (he was Wilhelm Clum). Some of the time was spent in Pennsylvania, but most was in and around Elizabeth and Plainsfield, New Jersey. I do know that Phillip was a follower of John Hust. I am confused by the term "Bohemia" used in term, yet I understand that Von is German, while Van is Dutch designation. Is there anyone who can clarify this for me? Thank you for any help.

My greatgreat grandmother was Maria Shewell and niece of Eliz. Shewell. But the dates don't line up unless Mr Shewell had a son named Robert. Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

Comments: I found the information very interesting on German names as I have at least three surnames that origionated in Germany or Alsace in the 18th century. I have information from Germany on my grandmothers family where in all the generations the mens names began with Johann. My grandmothers brother was named Johann August Adam. In the US he went by August John with no reference to the Adam. I have a Christian Neighberger who was born 1729 in Strassbourg, Alsace. Does any one know what this name could have been in Alsace? I cannot find anything on the other side of the "pond"
