Comments: Fantastic reading! And what a lot of effort you put into this - I admire your stamina! I've been living in London, UK for the last five years after spending most of my grown up life in Stuttgart/Germany (I was brought up in Kuchen in the state of Baden-Württemberg). It seems being abroad makes it more important to find out where ancestors have come from and where they went to. Many thanks for giving people the opportunity to use your site for communicating with each other.

Comments: I believe we have located our ancestor's original land just north of Krumsville in what was "Allemangel", just along Oswald Rd. We used a technique developed by Arthur Weaner, noted Adams Co historian/genealogist. By knowing and drawing to scale the plot of the warrant and obtaining an aerial map of the area, you can often locate the original boundaries, fence rows, streams, etc by overlay process. It works! Arthur located my ancestor's land in Adams Co., acquired after he left Berks Co ca 1755. You have a great site. Thanks!

My Grandmother was born a Ruth and her father was born near Seven Valleys, PA and spoke Pennsylvania Dutch until leaving the area during his early 20's. Comments: With regard to the Hilts name we are not postive of the correct spelling. Some members of the family spell it both ways. The research revolves around my husband greatgrandmother and we know her family was of Penn.Dutch descent. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The name Sinclair is for my husband's gr gr grandfather. On his great grandfather's censuses (1871-1881) he is listed as a farmer descended from United Empire Loyalist and German nationality, on John's death certificate it also lists his father as being born in Germany. We are just beginning to the research and still fairly new at it, any help would be appreciated.

Records show that he did, on September 5, 1751, in Philadelphia, "...take and subscribe the usual Qualifications," after arriving from Rotterdam, via the Orkneys in Scotland, on the ship Shirley. He emigrated from PA through VA and then to NC where he died as Jacob Hoots in 1801. His year of birth is substantiated by a VA militia record of 1757 that shows his age as 30. I am trying to find a documented link to his family in Germany. Please contact me if you have any suggestions. I visit Europe often and can do direct research there.

Thank you for allowing me to see some of your information and by the way: Jacob is a doll baby!!

Comments: I have read your article on PA Dutch and agree whole heartedly with you. In South Africa, we fortunately do not have this misnomer due to accurate records that were maintained. What we do have is the spelling of names changing due to Dutch interpretations of German sounds. I am trying to find the passenger list containing the name of Frederich Grobler who arrived in America in 1712 and additional information. I suspect that he may be related to Johann Grobler who arrived in South Africa in 1708. (See Julia Krapfl's Brandenburg homepage). I still have to establish a homepage and will do so as soon as I have compiled all the information on hand. My family tree is complete up to Johann Grobler the first. A good site without to many frills, I like it

Comments: Thanks so much for all the great information! It really helped my research make more sense. My ancestor, Daniel Gartman was supposedly born in South Carolina in 1792. Family rumor says that his father was possibly John Christopher Gartman. Daniel named his first son Thomas Barthalomew Gartman, his second son John Wesley Gartman, and his third son Daniel J. Gartman. He named his first daughter Susan (after her mother). The Daniel Gartman (b.1792), family had 12 children. They migrated to GA and then to AL, from S.C. Pre-colonial records list a John Christopher Gartman and a Bartholomew Gartman. We think they migrated down from PA. to S.C., prior to 1792. Does anyone have information that would tie into this family?

Comments: Surely do like your oompah music. Also the German name bit which although it hasn't worked out for much I did find my 4th g-g-gfather Christian Otto's third son was named Christian. Getting possible first names for the grandparents of Christian (the younger) has not produced a grandparent and perhaps never will. But I have pinned down the Christian Otto that is mine. In the 1820 USC there were Christian Otto's in both Perry and Lancaster Co.'s, Both about the same age and with very similar families (number of children and ages. But onward and upward. Earl P. Otto

Comments: Oral family states that we are decendents of the Pennsylvania Dutch. Oral history also states the the our family name origianaly was spelled Seaboldt. It was changed to its current form when one of my ancestors had a scrape with the law and a judge forced the change. My Great Grandfather's name was Alanzo Seabolt. He was born in Peekskill NY in 1862 (accoriding to 1920 census records). He died in Michigan in the 40's and just prior to his death he attended his mother's funeral in NY. I have not been able to trace any farther than this and I could use some help. If anyone can offer any information I would greatly appreceate it.

Comments: My earliest known ancestor in America was in Lancaster Co., PA, by 1754. I do not know if he was part of the Palatine immigration, but do know he sold land in PA and moved down the vallies of VA to settle in KY. I believe the family maintained much of the Germanic cultural traits for a couple of generations in KY.

Comments: Hallo!

He thinks maybe that is where he was from. I think he found this info in a pensions book. I called my dad right after I checked out your web page, he is hoping you can direct us. Comments: You do good work. I visited almost all of your pages, and found your work to be accurate, reflecting your long experience. I've been researching Maurer families for about 18 years, and wish someone would publish a book for Pa-German researchers, incorporating naming customs, baptismal customs, funerals, wills, maps, foods, religion, Bibles, etc. Rev. Fred Weiser wrote a dynamite article on Pa-German death records, others have written extensively on Fraktur, but no one has gathered all this info into one source for us. I may publish a Maurer data book some day to help researchers of the common surname Maurer. I have lived in Heidelberg for 22 years and read and speak German, and can speak some local dialects, but cannot yet read the old German script. The Maurers were prob. orig. Swiss, cantons bern or zurich, but prob. emigrated to Pa. in 1765 from Alsace or Palatinate. Prob. Berks Co., first, then what is now Snyder (Beaver Springs area), then Wayne Co. Ohio about 1821-27, then spread out to Wabash Co., INd. and Putnam Co., Mo. In about 1912 or so my grandfather moved to Skagit Co., Wash. I was quite surprised to learn that he spoke a few words of German, such as Gabel (fork), milch (milk), etc. And my aunt, 87 or so, told me this story, so maybe the speaking of German has not died out in my family, despite being in American 233 years! I will not ask you to do any research, as I am also plagued by beginners wanting help, German maps, etc. I work full time, and find little time to do my own research. Gunug...Isch babble zu viel (Enough...I'm speaking too much). Michael S. Mowrer (Maurer or Mauerer originally) Wiesloch near Heidelberg, Germany (I edit a little U.S. Army weekly newspaper over here. We may have corresponded before through the Internet or Palatines to America, of which I'm a member).

Comments: Newcomer to your page - very good! I am interested in finding a connection for our gggrandfather, Warner PETERS, who was born in VA in 1797. Family stories have it that he was English or Scots-Irish, but lived in the same area (PA, WV - late 1700 & early 1800) as the "Pennsylvania Dutch". I have always wondered about his given name, "Warner", if it was perhaps a family name on his mother's side, which would connect him to a German heritage. I have his complete history from 1820 on, so am interested in finding his parents and siblings. Other names in the family in WV are Catherine Jackson, his wife, whom I believe was the daughter of William and Margaret Jackson. Margaret Jackson was the daughter of Thomas Boyles. Thanks for your interest - hope someone will have some link for me!

Comments: Thank you for clearing up the origin of some of these German immigrants. Our family always thought that the TROSTELS came to PA from the Netherlands. Instead, I'm sure they came here from Germany. Great Web site. Thanks, Linda Webb
