Comments: Hallo!

He has found back to a gggg grand father I think and his name was Henry Kirkner and he knows that he signed up in 1777 in Berks Co. PA. to the Sixth Regiment of the PA. Line Company, Cont. Est. He thinks maybe that is where he was from. I think he found this info in a pensions book. I called my dad right after I checked out your web page, he is hoping you can direct us. Thank you for your time.

Comments: You do good work. I visited almost all of your pages, and found your work to be accurate, reflecting your long experience. I've been researching Maurer families for about 18 years, and wish someone would publish a book for Pa-German researchers, incorporating naming customs, baptismal customs, funerals, wills, maps, foods, religion, Bibles, etc. Rev. Fred Weiser wrote a dynamite article on Pa-German death records, others have written extensively on Fraktur, but no one has gathered all this info into one source for us. I may publish a Maurer data book some day to help researchers of the common surname Maurer. I have lived in Heidelberg for 22 years and read and speak German, and can speak some local dialects, but cannot yet read the old German script.
My Maurers were prob. orig. Swiss, cantons bern or zurich, but prob. emigrated to Pa. in 1765 from Alsace or Palatinate. Prob. Berks Co., first, then what is now Snyder (Beaver Springs area), then Wayne Co. Ohio about 1821-27, then spread out to Wabash Co., INd. and Putnam Co., Mo. In about 1912 or so my grandfather moved to Skagit Co., Wash. I was quite surprised to learn that he spoke a few words of German, such as Gabel (fork), milch (milk), etc. And my aunt, 87 or so, told me this story, so maybe the speaking of German has not died out in my family, despite being in American 233 years!
I will not ask you to do any research, as I am also plagued by beginners wanting help, German maps, etc. I work full time, and find little time to do my own research. Gunug...Isch babble zu viel (Enough...I'm speaking too much). Michael S. Mowrer (Maurer or Mauerer originally) Wiesloch near Heidelberg, Germany (I edit a little U.S. Army weekly newspaper over here. We may have corresponded before through the Internet or Palatines to America, of which I'm a member).

Comments: I really appreciated the harpsichord background on the page I watched . . . would you mind telling me who the performer is . . . I really enjoyed listening. My initial reason for scrolling through your site was to see if anything there might lead me to a source where I could learn who Abraham Rinehart, b. 1748, to Johan Georg and Maria Barbara (Raup/Raub) Reinhart, married. I am assuming it would have taken place in St. Paul's Blue Church, but I have been unsuccessful, so far, in learning where the old records are currently kept, if they have even survived. Thanks for the music, and taking the time to read my note.

Comments: Newcomer to your page - very good! I am interested in finding a connection for our gggrandfather, Warner PETERS, who was born in VA in 1797. Family stories have it that he was English or Scots-Irish, but lived in the same area (PA, WV - late 1700 & early 1800) as the "Pennsylvania Dutch". I have always wondered about his given name, "Warner", if it was perhaps a family name on his mother's side, which would connect him to a German heritage. I have his complete history from 1820 on, so am interested in finding his parents and siblings. Other names in the family in WV are Catherine Jackson, his wife, whom I believe was the daughter of William and Margaret Jackson. Margaret Jackson was the daughter of Thomas Boyles. Thanks for your interest - hope someone will have some link for me!

Comments: I understand the naming customs better after reading your page. I was confused a bit after seeing the same names over and over in my line. In most cases, I have only one given name, so I am wondering, would that be because only the secular name was used during their lifetime? I am at a loss as to how to find my ggg-grandfather, who came over from Germany, but only the name Henry Palmer to go on. That is my biggest brick wall to this point. I am going to check out your nickname page also. Thank you.

It alerts me to the need for knowing the full name, not just the first name of a family member such as ancestor, Georg Heinrich Weidner (Weitnauer). Great contribution to many! Glen Whitener

This all fits into the scheme of my lines and may make further research a little easier. Thanks.

His father was Jacob Loudenslager born in 1800 but I don't know where. I'm wondering if you have run across where the name was spelled differently than what you have here. I feel there probably is a connection. My last name [married name] is Winterrowd and we know that there have been 31 different spellings of it in the US since the first one came over from Germany in 1632. I imagine Loudenslager has changed too. What do you know about this? Thanks!

Comments: Congratulations to Mr.Kerchner for his great contribution. Finally somebody to clear up the misnomer PA-Dutch and explain the right designation PA-German. After the Amer. Rev. many PA-Germans left with their families to move north to Ontario and settled near Niagara. If suddenly a name disappears between 1784-1796 from Pennsylvania, it may be a good idea to look north. The music is great to listen to. Keep digging, the truth is out there somewhere.
